White River Summary

The 2025 White River event offered seven courses in a small area of scattered trees, countless erosion gullies, and an absence of trails. We added a pin-flagged trail for the easier courses, but competitors on the other courses also benefited from referencing it. In order to plan for seven courses to use the same relatively small area, we had to design the longer courses to reuse the entire area more than once, which resulted in lots of controls in close proximity. To add to the challenge, the map used an unusual 1:5000 scale, which proved to be disorienting to anyone expecting a 1:10,000 or 1:7500 scale map. It was easy for them to overshoot controls that they were looking for.

The competitors enjoyed the challenges presented by these backcountry courses. Except for one mis-punch and two DNFs, everyone finished their courses. There were many interesting stories, including some misadventures, about their experiences.

This event was a preview of what we are planning as one of two MTHD events in the 2026 Pacific Northwest Orienteering Festival and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone at those events.

Thanks very much to Del Scharffenberg and William Emerson for picking up controls and to Debbie Newell for providing tips on the Results software. And a huge thanks to Nora Tom for helping with the packing up, setting up, breaking down, and packing up again of the event center, handling check-ins, picking up pin flags, and making the delicious rice crispie treats.
