Mt Hood Orienteering
2025 Mt Hood Forest 2-Day - Skyline Sno-Park Results and Summary

The 2025 Skyline event was Mt Hood Orienteering’s first national ranking event. The venue was mostly forested, with three vehicle tracks and no other existing trails. As there were few natural trails in this area of the park, we created temporary ones using orange pin flags for certain sections of the white, yellow, and orange courses. This wasn’t necessary for the advanced courses; most of their navigation was done in natural forest terrain.

As the competition map covered 1.75 sq km, two loops were created for the red and blue courses with a map flip between the loops. The other courses were designed with single loops. The most notable features on the map were fallen trees and stumps and the climb on the intermediate and advanced courses was kept to less than a 4 percent grade. We plan to expand this map so that we can have up to two days of competition at this venue in the future.

Most ran advanced courses with 51% running Blue, Red, and Green and 32% running Brown. In addition, 6% of the competitors ran the intermediate courses and 11% ran the beginner course. The winning times suggest that the blue, white, and yellow courses were probably a bit short, but the other courses were sized nicely to the OUSA guidelines for classic-distance events.

Also included with this event were a model course and two kidd-O courses. The model course, located across the road from the competition area, featured six controls that represented what would be encountered in actual competition. The kidd-O courses included a point-to-point course and a score-O course.

The event also included a post-event social with food and drink at the nearby snowmobile shelter between the parking areas. There was plenty for everyone, although we ran out of the very popular cookies by the end of the event.

We couldn’t have pulled this off without every one of our volunteers. Many thanks to all of you who contributed to making this event a success.
