2025 Portland Rogaine Summary
For the first Portland Metrogaine, we had a good turnout of thirty-two people. The event map covered 27 square kilometers with 100 virtual controls spread across downtown, NW Portland, Washington Park, Arlington Heights, Kings Heights, and Forest Park. Beginners and families could easily do the flatter NW Portland and downtown areas while the runners could go for the more complicated hilly residential and forested areas. The winners typically ventured into many ydifferent areas.
For the six-hour course, we had three teams that braved the steep terrain in Forest Park, with two of them barely getting all the controls in that park. The Curlers Off Ice team (Daniel Simon and Keven Rutherford) finished first with 3210 points after running an impressive 48.8 km (30.3 miles) in mountainous terrain. Also impressive were the performances of the other two teams (Fungis and Canoe-02) that each ran close to marathon distances (the Fungis team also got all the Forest Park controls).
For the four-hour course, the Brothers Forever team (Ken and Terry Wenzel) went 20+ km through Kings Heights and Forest Park to acquire 1120 points. Laura Weller placed a very close second with 1100 points, and Team Lago (Nick Appelmans and Irma Lagomarsino) placed third with 980 points.
For the two-hour course, John Treadwell easily finished first with 460 points. The Point & Seek team (Chris Flaherty and Molly McCluskey) and Sue Kuestner finished second and third respectively with a difference of only 10 points between them.
Kathleen Kerns, Tony Pinkham, and Nora Tom checked the courses. Nora also made the rice crispy treats and PB&J sandwiches. Kathleen managed registration, results, and the website. Tony made the map and designed the courses. Thanks to Portland Parks and Recreation department for the use of the shelter in Wallace Park. And thanks to everyone for coming out and participating!
