Event Summary - Skyline NRE (PNWOF Stage 5)

The Skyline Event was the next to last competition of the 2026 PNWOF and was designed to test orienteers navigational skills in a true PNW Forest. The competition was designed around long technical courses in a mature forest with a few clearings and gullies and a fair number of downed trees.  One course included a map flip.

The results showed that the courses were sized about right with the top finishers having times close to targeted finish times. The results also showed that the deep dark forest was a challenge for some orienteers.

The controls were mostly set out the day before the event, with those close to the event center placed the morning of the event by Ali Crocker.

One lesson I learned was to have a good, detailed list of who was picking up which controls at the end of the event.  At 6:30 PM in the evening we were still trying to locate about 6 of the controls, finally located in a backpack that had been used to pick up the controls.

I want to thank everyone who volunteered and helped make this event a success.

Event Summary - White River West NRE (PNWOF Stage 6)

The White River West event was the final competition of the 2026 Pacific Northwest Orienteering Festival. This competition had middle-distance technical courses in an environment that combined forests with scattered trees and a barren, rocky landscape with countless gullies. Competitors had to mentally shift gears as they went from one environment to the next. The competition area was small, so the maps used 1:7500 scale and each of the advanced courses included a map flip.

The results showed that the courses were sized about right with the top finishers having times just a couple minutes over the targeted finish times. With the larger scales, the times might have been slightly faster.

The controls were mostly set two days before the event so that our limited crews could help out at the Skyline event. Unfortunately, that meant that two days of high winds were able to pull a few controls out of the ground. Fortunately, Mark Sandifer, who woke up the controls for the brown course before the event, was able to reset the blown over controls before others came by.

We couldn't have pulled this off without every one of our volunteers. Many thanks to all of you who contributed to making this event a success. I apologize if I've left anyone out here:
