Event Summary

Nineteen orienteers came out to the event center at Orenco Woods Nature Park in Hillsboro for one of the four courses (1, 3, 6, and 9 hours) of our first Transit Metrogaine.  The participants enjoyed their runs, and most are planning to return next year with their friends. We appreciate all the feedback we received so we can make this event even better next year.

On the 1-hour course, Kevin Matson was the lone competitor; he had a lot of fun exploring the Orenco Woods Nature Park and community, and he finished with nearly 9 minutes to spare.

On the 3-hour course, Team Lago finished first after enjoying their adventure in Washington Park. Glen Cafferty finished second after exploring the Hillsboro downtown area. Team Labbe-Scheinberg finished third with overtime that zeroed out their score (thanks to a maintenance slowdown on their transit ride), but that didn’t lower their enthusiasm after exploring multiple venues.

On the 6-hour course, Del Scharffenberg barely beat the Gottsacker team by 100 points. Del did found 20 controls versus 23 for the Gottsackers and he finished with just 90 seconds left on the clock. The Liddiard/Howe team finished a strong third after also finding 23 control sites. Nora Tom came in fourth feeling triumphant as a new orienteer who enjoyed finding more controls than in previous events and loved exploring multiple communities. The Boyles family came in fifth after mixing multiple transit rides with orienteering and dining in various communities. Their kids readily finished the day with even more orienteering on a very long Kidd-O course around the park.

The 9-hour course had one team. Kyle Hogue from Cascade Orienteering Club and first-time orienteer Pam Hellesto travelled 130 km to find 39 controls at 6 venues for a total of 3980 points. Both were smiling as they finished their long adventure that took them from Hillsboro to Eastern Portland, to the top of Powell Butte, and to Gres ham.

This event utilized 14 venues located between Hillsboro and Gresham. Ten of these venues were visited by the competitors. Next year, we will use a few of the same venues along with a few new ones. We are also hoping to use a more centralized event center that offers quick access to all MAX trains and many bus lines. Based on the fun that our competitors had this year, the event next year is one not to be missed.
