2026 HIllsboro Metrogaine Summary

Attendance on a rainy Super Bowl Sunday was light, but that didn’t stop our competitors from having a good time on their courses. We offered 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-hour courses and had competitors registered for all courses. Unfortunately, we did have a couple of cancellations at the last minute, one of which was the only person registered for the longest course.

The Tigard venue was half relatively flat and half hilly with some very steep climbs up Bull Mountain. Of course, the higher-point controls were on top of Bull Mountain or on its far side from the event center. A surprising number of competitors endured those climbs to get to the highest-point controls.

The 1-hour course was designed for new orienteers and anyone recovering from prior injuries. The Monson Meanders team, with a member recovering from a broken leg bone, did that course and finished smiling without any overtime penalties.

The 2-hour course had the most competitors. Tyler Wilson finished first with 1090 points with just 30 seconds to spare, and his score placed him 10 points ahead of the top finishers on the 4-hour course. Tyler had an incredible run over Bull Mountain to the far side and then back over the mountain again to get all but one of the 100-point controls. Team Shiska (Alexander Myachin and Evgeny Lyahovich) finished second despite having early technical problems using the MapRun app for the first time. Jay Hennigan finished third despite a seven-minute time penalty.

The 4-hour course was won by the formidable Canoe-O2 team (Del and Erik Scharffenberg) with 1200 points less a 4-minute overtime penalty (-120 points), which left them in first place but 10 points behind the top finisher on the 2-hour course. Nora Tom placed second with 50 points on one of her first orienteering courses—she also persevered the climb up Bull Mountain. Glen Cafferty finished third despite a navigation mishap that took him a ways off his intended course when trying to finish on time.
