Event Description

Mt Hood Orienteering’s first scatter-O competition explores the 4.75 square-kilometer area of SW Portland west of the Stonehenge radio/TV tower. For this scatter-O event, find all but one or two virtual control sites on your map in any order (you decide which ones to skip). You have a choice of a short or a long course and you must finish your course within 3 hours or 2 PM, whichever occurs first (this should easily be more time than required to complete your course). Each solo competitor or team will use a phone with the MapRun app installed on it for timing and to record the controls found.
There will also be a long bike-O course for those interested in pedaling their way on the long course. Human powered unicycles, bicycles, tricycles, and quad-cycles are all allowed for helmeted cyclists. Electric assist is allowed for mobility scooters.

Because this event is happening in July when heatwaves are possible, we are starting competitors between 9 and 11 AM, when it will be cooler. You will not be able to look at your map before you start unless you are a beginner on the short course. Beginners can take a short introductory lesson before doing their course.

Your placement in the results depends on your time and finding the minimum number of controls required for your course.
As always, there will also be a free kidd-O course for our youngest orienteers at the event center. This course is designed so that these orienteers can venture on their own within sight of their guardians or with their guardians.
This is an almost all-weather event that can be postponed if serious heat wave conditions exist in the morning hours. In the event of a postponement, we will announce any scheduling changes to everyone who has registered for this event.
